What he is trying to to do may keep our young people from acquiring the education they are striving to have. This will be devastating for them and for Our Country. We need educated people. I truly believe they don't want that because they are afraid of educated people because they are not easily convinced of everything and or anything. They analyze information and make an intelligent decision.
This direction has to stop it will destroy The United States of America and Our Democracy 🇺🇸
Ever hopeful this will not happen the direction will go the right way again.
We deserve a Government that works for us not against us.
He is so INSECURE that he fears intelligent educated people! That is why he has surrounded himself with the ultimate in DEI hires - stupid, insipid white men who couldn't get a real job based on their skills!
Congress could stop this. By revoking djt's claim to the act that we are in an emergency of threat to our Country. It would stop elon muskrat in his tracks. Start calling Congress to voice your DISDAIN.
Yes, thank you for your suggestions, MK. I actually do write, call and join as many podcasts, town halls, meetings etc. in my district. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the salaries of elected officials are paid for by our tax dollars! Ask this: Is djt (and his cronies) the employee(s) of the month at your company????
Yes I remember. For him dumb and dumber is best. They are below Stupid. The ignorant ones could become informed and educated but STUIPD IS FOREVER it's a death sentence They like being STUPID they wear it like a badge of honor. They believe everything and anything they are told. Sheep going to slaughter are more intelligent than they are. I have more concern and empathy for the sheep.
Those people put all of us in danger. Many of us tried to explain to them the dangers but noooo they wouldn't have any of it. djt is their end all to be all. Unfortunately.
Maybe most of them will have a come to Jesus enlightenment only time will tell. But for now we are living in a horror show every day every way. Congress is full of gutless wonders COWARDS and TRAITORS IGNORING THEIR OATH TO THE CONSTITUTION AND ALL OF THE AMERICA PEOPLE 🇺🇸
MY HOPE IS THE DEMOCRATS TAKE THE SENATE AND CONGRESS BACK AND THE CHAOS GOES AWAY. ALL THE PIECES WILL HAVE TO BE PUT BACK TOGETHER. OUR CHILDREN GRANDCHILDREN AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL THIS DESTRUCTION.
THANK YOU NOT djt. I JUST WANT TO PEE ON YOUR GRAVE.
I graduated with a BS in IT 25 years ago. My loans have more than doubled since then. If you need assistance or reduced loan payment terms, it will just increase the pain. It’s not a solution, it’s a red herring.
My wife went back to school 15 years ago, she is now a 4th grade teacher. Her loans are also increasing (drastically). We owe close to 100k…it’s a burden beyond anything I’d imagined while getting a bachelor’s degree.
One of the issues of broad loan forgiveness is…then what? What happens to the current students, with loans not yet due? In the future, will the other loans be forgiven? If that’s the case, I’d imagine schools would jack their prices up and/or new types of loans will be created (ones that can’t be forgiven)?
There are several sticky issues with forgiving loans. But, it’s still a problem we should tackle. We need to model our higher education after European/Scandinavian systems. We also need to offer many tech programs…skill based training for just about every profession (welding, construction, IT, programming, automotive repair, design, healthcare/respiratory/nursing, etc.). There are some in place now, but it all needs to be expanded exponentially. These professions should include more “tracks”, started in high school. In Scandinavia, there are 23 yr old MD’s…they chose early on and progressed. These types of options need to be available to our students (more than they currently are).
Katie, why are you partially undercutting your own argument by saying higher education "isn't for everyone?" I think you meant that not everyone needs to attend college to get a fulfilling, well-paying job. But the difference -- and what I think you intended to say -- is that higher education SHOULD be available for everyone who wants it, and for everyone whose life could be improved by it. My position is this: Why should students and parents have to choose? Why can our society not offer both technical training and liberal arts education to young people to expose them to everything they will need to live good lives? Why not cooperation agreements between different types of satellite campuses to spread the operating costs, and yet allow students to fluidly transfer between one type of curriculum and another?
College isn’t for everybody but making sure that there are well paid jobs that don’t require a higher education is also an important Priority
One-size-fits-all solutions never work
So saying college isn’t for everybody is just reality and the department of education can help people get the education they need if it’s funded properly
some folk are not higher educated but rather blue caller destined; the mechanics ; the bakers and others do not require higher education to contribute to society!
Even if they don't require it to be able to work and support themselves, I believe they should be able to get exposure to all types of education rather than I or anyone else deciding their path for them. Why can't a plumber be interested in 18th century French writers, or the study of social movements in North Africa?
Bless you, Katie, your's is the Voice of Experience and I trust your explanation of the Laws and insight. You'll always have my full support in all of your ventures, and will reStack ASAP 🙏💯👍🇺🇸💙💪
I’m paying mine back, and have never missed a payment. Having said that, we cannot stand by while our education system is dismantled. We have to have educated people to keep our country competitive.
And what will Trump do to school lunches? That's a really important one because we have so much poverty with to many children. If they don't eat well, they won't learn well, and our kids will keep falling behind.
Knowledge. Living, seeing, hearing, feeling are free. So too should that knowledge that is hidden without the instruments we have created. What I’m saying is that all knowledge should and must be FREE.
. . . But I addressed a tangential issue. Bringing myself back to Katie Porter's topic: hell, yes, we need a Department of Education. The states don't have the money or resources to provide or administer loan and grant services to students. And it would be horrific to increase the burden on the states, especially the poorest. A likely result would be a 50-piece patchwork of drastically unequal prospects of ever getting a chance at higher ed, with some states offering extensive alternatives, and others facing closure of public institutions due to insufficient state funds to go around. Since we don't yet have free or reasonably priced higher education for all, I believe Federal assistance is still highly necessary.
My daughter is at Embry Riddle aeronautical University in FL. She's working on her PhD. The department had already received approval of a grant application,,, now have received notice it may be cancelled. Absolutely ridiculous of the Feds!🤬

Diaper Don is all about keeping everyone uneducated and working in factories, including children.

AMEN! That's their plan exactly!
tRumpskers have forgotten that they are employees of the people, by the people and for the people.
TRUMP-YOU'RE FIRED! As are all your cronies.

Do you remember, "I love the poorly educated"? Said by Trump back when he was half-lucid.
Yes I remember. For him dumb and dumber is best. They are below Stupid. Thank you for letting me vent. M K
Thank you Rep. Porter..thank you for all you do. Can there be 300+ more of “you” in politics?

Funny, there were no "sticky issues" with BILLIONS IN PPP LOAN FORGIVENESS.
"What happens to current students with loans not due?"
You cannot problem solve by addressing a problem that doesn't exist.
We didn't solve WWII by demanding it solve WWIII.
Yeah…that is horrifying. It will destroy us.

Katie I have been a fan for a long time, and now I will actually get to vote for you for California's next Governor!

We use to have free or reasonably affordable higher education (60s, 70s, early 80s).
Republicans have been defunding it for over 30 plus years.
Republicon's "solution" like all their junk "solutions":
1) basically privatize higher education - public in name only
2) create dozens of non-accreditted "schools," and junk degrees
3) force colleges to raise tuition prices high
4) charge fee for service for everything
5) students and parents should take loans - because "that's Capitalism baby!"
6) Hit students with predatory interest, flood market with predatory lenders, and other scams
7) watch student loans default and take economy down,
8) make Dems clean up vomitous mess Republicons made
Katie Porter is a gem. I wish she were Canadian.
Your turn👍🏼
Katie!

Go fund me account! Great investment in the future!
